Ponstel is used for the relief of moderate pain and for the treatment of menstrual pain. It might also be used by your doctor in other cases as he deems fit. It is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
Following the dosage instructions of your doctor is the best way to use any medication. If you are unsure or do not remember the instructions then you may read the medicine label for more detailed information.
You may choose to take Ponstel with a meal or an antacid to avoid an upset stomach. You can also take it with a glass of milk.
Despite your best attempts at remembering, if you still miss out on a dose, then take it as soon as you remember about it. But keep in mind that you will have to adjust your next dose by spacing it out by 4 to 5 hours. If this is not possible, then the best thing to do would be to skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.
Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.
Store Ponstel at room temperature.
An overdose of Ponstel may have adverse effects that require immediate medical attention. Contact the nearest emergency poison control center immediately if you notice effects like drowsiness, lack of energy, nausea, stomach toxicity and vomiting.
Doctors advise against using Ponstel if you are allergic to any ingredient in it or if you have conditions like severe allergic reaction (e.g., severe rash, hives, trouble breathing, growths in the nose, dizziness) to aspirin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) (e.g., ibuprofen, celecoxib); Had or will have a heart bypass surgery; kidney problems, ulcers, or inflammation of the stomach or bowel; you are in your last 3 months of pregnancy.
Discuss your past/current medical history in detail with your doctor before beginning treatment with any new medication. If you are using any other NSAID then mention it to your doctor.
Ponstel may increase the risk of getting dizziness or drowsiness. This risk greatly increases if you combine it with alcoholic beverages or certain other drugs. So please avoid them while using Ponstel. Also, avoid undertaking any tasks which require mental alertness (driving, handling heavy machinery etc).
Doctors may prescribe certain laboratory tests like kidney function, complete blood cell counts, and blood pressure to determine how you have responded to treatment and to gauge the severity of the side effects of Ponstel. Please Keep all lab appointments and do not miss any tests.
Please inform your lab technician or surgeon that you are taking Ponstel before you undergo any emergency surgical procedure including dental operations.
The use of Ponstel in children below 14 years is not recommended as its safety when used on children is not determined.
Do not take aspirin if you are taking Ponstel.
Using Ponstel for a long time or taking it in high doses may increase the chances of having side effects like serious stomach ulcers or bleeding. You should notify your doctor if you experience black, tarry stools; vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds; or unusual weight gain or swelling.
It should be used with caution on elderly people as they are more susceptible to its side effects.
If you are expecting a child or are planning to have a child in the near future, then consult your doctor before using Ponstel to discuss any possible threats to the unborn baby. Do not take Ponstel if you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
If you are a nursing mother and breast feed your baby, then too, seek consultation before using Ponstel as it is excreted in the breast milk and may enter the baby.
